Railway school once owned by First Lady in shambles

Railway school in Karachi Cantt valuing Rs10b handed over to NGO which ruined school infrastructure: School was first owned by First Lady Samina Alvi: NGO accused of demanding donations

February 22, 2023 05:11 PM

The infrastructure of a railway school in Karachi Cantt, which was owned by First Lady Samina Alvi and later handed over to an NGO, was in a dilapidated condition and the organisation is demanding donations from others, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.

The NGO took donations worth millions of rupees and did not get it audited. Despite being going under the control of an NGO, the railway kept on providing desk and infrastructure to the school.

Chairman of the NA committee Qadir Mandokhail alleged that Pakistan Railways without making SOPs handed over the school to president’s wife (First Lady Samina Alvi).

The school spans over 3.8 acres of land which values Rs 10 billion, he said. Mandokhail said the NGO had occupied the school land and Pakistan Railways was involved in that plot.

Ali Pervaiz Malik said irregularities had been committed but the railways was not accepting that. He said if the PR could not run its schools, they should outsource all schools. Ali Pervaiz Malik further said if railway could run the school, it should take control of the school back in its hands.

Chairman Railways told the committee that schools were handed over to the NGO in 2015.

Qadir Mandokhail said in a previous meeting the Pakistan Railways had said that possession of this school will be taken back from the NGO. But in 2022, the contract with NGO was renewed for three years by the Pakistan Railways. Chairman Committee Qadir Mandokhail has sought a report in this regard from Ministry of Railway Affairs within a week.

“It should also be told that how much donations Insaf Welfare had collected,” he said.
