Punjab to establish 1,000 sports academies in educational institutions
Cricket academies will also set up in schools, colleges
Punjab’s Minister for Higher Education, Rana Sikandar Hayat, and former cricket star Muhammad Yousuf Tuesday discussed the promotion of sports in educational institutions across the province, the 24NewsHd TV channel reported.
During the meeting, both sides deliberated over multiple proposals to uplift the standard of sports in academic institutions.
The minister revealed that the Punjab government is in the process of establishing 1,000 sports academies across the province’s educational institutions.
Minister Hayat added that these academies will provide training facilities and help identify talent at the grassroots level.
The minister further emphasized that work is already underway in collaboration with the Olympic Association and the Baseball Federation to ensure broad-based growth of various sports.
The provincial government will establish cricket academies within educational institutions, he said, adding that a pilot project will be launched in the first phase, starting with five schools and five colleges, where cricket academies will be set up.
Former batting legend Mohammad Yousuf has pledged his services and will serve as a coach, providing guidance and training to young players at the grassroots level.
“We are creating opportunities for youth to receive training and even pursue county cricket in England,” said Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat.
“Learning how to perform under pressure is a critical skill, and Mohammad Yousuf will play a vital role in nurturing that mindset among our budding cricketers.”
The minister also highlighted plans to establish sports academies specifically for girls, ensuring gender inclusivity in the province’s sports development agenda.
He added that the government is leveraging modern technology to enhance coaching methods and performance analysis.
“This initiative is not just about sports—it’s about steering youth towards positive, healthy activities and away from the dangers of drug abuse,” stated Rana Sikandar Hayat.
“We are committed to utilizing talent at the grassroots level to build a brighter, more active future for our young generation.”
