Veteran politician Mian Azhar passes away after prolonged illness

Mian Azhar, a seasoned politician and former Governor of Punjab, passed away on Tuesday after a prolonged illness, family sources confirmed. He was 83. 

He was the father of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Hammad Azhar, and had been unwell for an extended period, during which he remained mostly out of the public eye.

Mian Azhar served as governor of Punjab from 1990 to 1993 and later played a pivotal role in the founding and leadership of the Pakistan Muslim League–Quaid (PML-Q).

Over his political career, he held several important portfolios and remained an influential figure in Pakistan's political landscape.

In recent years, he had stepped back from active politics, while his son, Hammad Azhar, emerged as a prominent PTI leader, serving as a federal minister in various capacities.

Condolences poured in from political leaders and well-wishers across party lines, remembering Mian Azhar as a respectable figure who contributed significantly to the country’s politics and public service.

His funeral will be held at 1.30 PM at Model Town Ground, Lahore on Wednesday.
