Lahore traffic police detain 69 beggars during Eid crackdown

The city’s traffic police have intensified their crackdown on professional begging during Eid, detaining 69 individuals over the past two days as part of an anti-begging campaign launched on the directives of the Chief Traffic Officer, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Sunday.

The operation remained active on Chand Raat and Eid days, with dedicated anti-begging teams deployed across major roads and intersections, forcing beggars to vacate busy traffic points.

Officials said the initiative aims not only to ensure smooth traffic flow but also to address the organised nature of professional begging.

According to police data, those detained include 31 women, 15 men, 19 children, and four transgender individuals. Authorities stated that all individuals taken into custody were first provided with meals and later shifted to Edhi Homes for care and rehabilitation.

Chief Traffic Officer Dr Athar Waheed said the department is not only targeting beggars but is also taking action against groups and networks that allegedly operate and exploit them. 

He emphasised that removing professional beggars from roads contributes to better traffic management while also serving a humanitarian purpose by connecting vulnerable individuals with welfare institutions.

Citizens have been urged to report the presence of professional beggars at traffic signals and intersections by contacting the police helpline. Officials reiterated that the campaign would continue beyond Eid to ensure sustained enforcement and public safety.
