Wimbledon to debut video review system in 2026 Championships

Wimbledon will introduce a video review system at this year’s Championships, allowing players to challenge selected chair umpire decisions in a significant officiating change at the sport’s oldest and most prestigious Grand Slam.

The All England Club said the technology will be available on six show courts, including Centre Court and Court No. 1, where it will remain in use throughout the tournament.

On the other four show courts, No. 2, No. 3, Court 12, and Court 18, the system will be available until all singles matches on those courts have been completed.

Under the new system, players will be able to seek reviews on a range of disputed judgment calls, including double bounces, “not-up” rulings, foul shots, touches, and hindrance decisions. Reviews can be requested either immediately after a point-ending incident, when a player stops play at once, or at the end of a point in hindrance-related situations.

However, players will not be allowed to challenge decisions made by Wimbledon’s Electronic Line Calling (ELC) system, which replaced traditional line judges last year.

The new video review mechanism applies only to chair umpire judgment calls and not to in-or-out rulings handled by the automated system.

In a notable departure from traditional challenge systems, there will be no limit on the number of video reviews players can request, a move likely aimed at improving transparency and reducing controversy in close calls.

In addition, scoreboards on all courts will now visually display “out” and “fault” calls made by the ELC system to improve clarity for players and spectators.

The move brings Wimbledon in line with broader trends in top-level tennis, with video review having already debuted at the 2023 US. Open and now also in use at the Australian Open.

The ATP Tour has also moved toward broader adoption of video review across elite events.

Wimbledon 2026 is scheduled to begin on June 29 and run through July 12.
