PMA Lahore expresses concern over rabies deaths, dog attack incidents in Punjab

The Pakistan Medical Association Lahore has expressed serious concern over recent rabies-related deaths and a dog attack incident in Sialkot that left 18 people injured, 24NewsHD TV reported on Friday.

In a statement, PMA Lahore President Shahid Malik said two precious lives had already been lost due to rabies, while several victims of dog bites were at risk of developing the fatal disease.

He said that four affected patients are currently under treatment in the isolation ward of Mayo Hospital, Lahore, where they are being closely monitored due to the high risk of rabies infection.

Prof Malik described the situation as alarming, stressing that rabies is a deadly disease that requires immediate and emergency preventive measures to stop further spread.

He urged the Punjab government, district administrations, and municipal authorities to prioritize public safety and take swift action against dangerous stray dogs, which he said pose a serious threat to children, women, and the wider public.

He further noted that under Clause 3 of the Punjab Local Government Act 2025, local governments are empowered to take action for the control and removal of dangerous animals, and called for strict implementation of the law.

The PMA Lahore president emphasized that urgent action has become essential to prevent further loss of lives, disabilities, and the spread of rabies, terming it a pressing public health emergency.
