Diljit Dosanjh's mentor, Punjabi Sufi maestro Ustad Puran Shah Koti passes away at 72
Punjabi Sufi music has lost one of its most revered figures as Ustad Puran Shah Koti passed away on Monday, December 22, 2025, at the age of 72.
The esteemed musician and teacher had been battling a long illness, which ultimately claimed his life.
His death marks the end of an era in Punjab’s rich musical and cultural heritage.
Ustad Puran Shah Koti was not only a master vocalist but also a gifted mentor who shaped the careers of many well-known Punjabi singers, including Diljit Dosanjh, Hans Raj Hans, Jasbir Jassi, and Sabarkoti.
His deep understanding of music was complemented by an equally profound knowledge of literature, society, culture, and politics, which made him a highly respected intellectual figure.
Deepak Bali, Advisor for Culture and Tourism to the Government of Punjab (India), shared his admiration for the late maestro, recalling their first meeting in 1993. Bali described Ustad Puran Shah Koti as a man with remarkable intellect and the ability to speak effortlessly on diverse subjects. He also praised his unique voice, saying it had a lasting impact on all who heard it.
Born into a musical family, Ustad Puran Shah Koti received his early training from his father, Ranjan Das, before honing his skills under Waqir Hussain ‘Sahab’ of Patiala.
Despite humble beginnings, including a period when he lived in a small hut in Shahkot, Jalandhar, he remained committed to his art and his students. He often credited his wife for unwavering support during their most challenging times, including moments of financial hardship and lack of shelter.
Ustad Puran Shah Koti’s legacy extends to his son, Master Saleem (Saleem Shehzada), a prominent singer in his own right, whom the maestro personally mentored. His influence on Punjabi Sufi music and culture is immense, and his dedication to preserving classical and folk traditions continues through the artists he trained.
An anecdote shared by Deepak Bali reveals Ustad Puran Shah Koti’s unyielding passion for music.
Even after undergoing surgery and being advised by doctors not to sing, he continued to practice quietly from his bed, embodying his belief that “singing can never stop, even if I remain silent, music continues.”
