Pakistan’s do-or-die encounter against arch-rivals India today

Hosts and defending champions Pakistan’s campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy is hanging by a thread after suffering a humiliating defeat at the hands of New Zealand in their opening match. 

The loss has significantly dented the host nation’s chances, making their today (Sunday) match against arch-rivals India a virtual knockout encounter.

After their opening match defeat, Pakistan now must win both remaining matches against India and Bangladesh to secure a semi-final berth without depending on other results. A defeat against India would significantly diminish their chances of progress. 

A victory over India would keep Pakistan’s hopes alive, setting up a crucial final group match against Bangladesh on February 27. 

However, if Pakistan loses to India but wins against Bangladesh, qualification will hinge on net run rate calculations. 

Each team in Group A has played one match so far, New Zealand defeated Pakistan while India defeated Bangladesh.

Similarly, each team in Group B has played one match, Australia beat England while South Africa thrashed Afghanistan easily.     

Historically, Pakistan and India have faced off five times in Champions Trophy history. Pakistan holds the upper hand with three victories, while India has won twice.

Their most recent encounter in the 2017 Champions Trophy final saw Pakistan, led by Sarfaraz Ahmed, thrash India by 180 runs, securing their maiden Champions Trophy title emphatically.

In ODI history, the two teams have played 135 matches, with Pakistan winning 73 and India emerging victorious in 57. Five matches ended without a result.
