Satirical ‘Cupcake’ promo backfires as South Africa hand India record 76-run defeat

A satirical promotional advertisement aired by an Indian broadcaster ahead of the Super Eight clash between India and South Africa backfired spectacularly after India suffered a record-breaking defeat, 24NewsHD TV reported on Monday.

On Sunday, in a crucial Super Eight encounter of the tournament, South Africa thrashed India by 76 runs.

Chasing a challenging target of 188, the Indian batting lineup collapsed for just 111 runs, handing the Proteas a commanding win.

The defeat marked India’s heaviest loss in terms of runs in T20 World Cup history.

Previously, their biggest margin of defeat had come in the 2010 edition of the tournament, when Australia beat them by 49 runs.

Adding to the sting of the loss was a pre-match promotional clip released by the Indian broadcaster to hype the India–South Africa contest.

The advert, built around a symbolic “cupcake,” portrayed South Africa as inferior and India as dominant.

In the promo, an Indian and a South African cricket fan are shown approaching a cupcake placed on a restaurant table.

The South African fan reaches it first, picks it up, and apologizes to the Indian supporter.

In response, the Indian fan dismissively remarks that it does not matter because India had won the 2024 T20 World Cup and would also win the upcoming Super Eight clash — suggesting the South African fan could keep the cupcake.

However, the light-hearted mockery turned into an embarrassment after the on-field result told a completely different story.

South Africa’s clinical performance not only silenced the pre-match bravado but also exposed the unpredictability and intensity of top-tier T20 cricket.
