Imran Khan, Shah Mehmood to be indicted in PTI protest cases

Hardly 24 hours after a court acquitted PTI leader and ex-foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi in a May 9 case in Lahore, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad on Wednesday said that Qureshi and the former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan would be indicted in two cases of the party’s protest in Islamabad on the next hearing, scheduled to be held on July 30, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.  

ATC judge Tahir Abbas Sipra heard the cases.

Copies of the challan were distributed among the suspects during the hearing, while arrest warrants were issued for those who failed to show up.   

Two cases had been registered against Imran, Qureshi and others at Khana Police Station in Rawalpindi. 

An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore on Tuesday sentenced senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders including Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Ijaz Chaudhry, Omar Sarfraz Cheema, and Mian Mahmood Rashid to 10 years in prison each in the Sherpao Bridge arson and incitement case, stemming from the violent protests of May 9, 2023.

The court, however, acquitted six accused — including Qureshi, Hamza Pahat (son of lawyer and PTI leader Afzal Azeem Pahat), Rana Tanveer, Azaz Rafique, Ziyas and Muhammad Iftikhar — citing insufficient evidence.
