Govt approves import of 500,000 tons of sugar

Amid concerns over rising sugar prices and national supply shortages, the Sugar Advisory Board has approved the import of 500,000 tons of sugar in a bid to stabilise the market, reported 24NewsHD TV channel Monday.

The decision was taken during an important meeting of the Board, chaired by Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, who termed the move “inevitable” due to worsening conditions in the sugar supply chain.

“The country is facing a serious sugar shortage,” said the minister, blaming the arbitrary price hikes by sugar mill owners as a key reason behind the crisis. “This import decision is aimed at providing much-needed relief to consumers.”

According to officials, all formalities related to the import of sugar will be completed within a few days, after which the imported sugar will be made available in local markets.

Rana Tanveer added that strict monitoring mechanisms will also be implemented to track sugar supply and retail pricing across the country to prevent further manipulation.

He assured the public that the imported sugar would arrive soon and help lower prices, bringing immediate relief to the general public already grappling with inflation.
