Mouthwash alone can’t prevent oral cancer, dentist warns

Oral cancer cases are rising, driven by factors such as tobacco use, smoking, alcohol consumption, poor oral hygiene and delayed dental check-ups. While maintaining good oral care is important, experts caution that relying solely on brushing or mouthwash is not enough to prevent this serious disease.

Doctors explained that mouthwash helps reduce the microbial load in the mouth and supports overall oral hygiene, making it a useful addition to daily care.

However, they emphasized that it cannot prevent oral cancer. True prevention depends on eliminating key risk factors particularly tobacco, smoking, and gutkha and attending regular dental check-ups for early detection.

Doctors also highlighted some early warning signs of oral cancer that can often be detected at home.Persistent sores or ulcers in the mouth that do not heal within two weeks should never be ignored.

Similarly, the appearance of red or white patches on the oral mucosa, especially in individuals who use tobacco or smoke, may indicate pre-cancerous or cancerous changes and require immediate attention from a specialist.

Despite being largely preventable, oral cancer remains one of the most common cancers, making awareness and early intervention critical. Adopting a healthy lifestyle, avoiding harmful substances, maintaining proper oral hygiene, and scheduling regular dental visits are key steps to reduce risk and protect overall oral health.
