Brook's ton helps England to edge out Pakistan in thrilling T20 World Cup clash

Harry Brook’s ton propels England into the T20 World Cup semifinals with a narrow two-wicket win over Pakistan in a nail-biting contest at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Sri Lanka, on Tuesday.

Chasing a target of 165, England reached the mark in the final over, finishing at 165/8 in a tense finish.

Captain Harry Brook starred for England, scoring a match-defining century, while Will Jacks contributed 28 and Sam Curran added 16 runs.

Apart from these three, no other English batter managed double figures, with Phil Salt dismissed on the very first ball of the match.

For Pakistan, Shaheen Afridi was the pick of the bowlers, taking four wickets, supported by Mohammad Nawaz and Usman Tariq, who claimed two wickets each.

Despite Pakistan’s spirited bowling effort, England held their nerve in a nail-biting chase to book a semifinal berth.

Earlier, Pakistan set 165 runs target for England after opting to bat first.  

Pakistan posted a competitive total of 164 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs, setting England a target of 165 runs in a crucial Group 2 encounter. 

Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha won the toss and elected to bat first against England.

However, the innings began on a disappointing note as the opening pair of Sahibzada Farhan and Saim Ayub failed to provide a solid start.

 Ayub was dismissed for 7 runs, while skipper Salman Ali Agha also departed cheaply for just 5, putting Pakistan under early pressure.

A steady partnership between Babar Azam and Sahibzada Farhan helped stabilize the innings.

The duo played responsibly to rebuild the total before Babar was bowled for 25 runs with the team score at 73.

Farhan continued to anchor the innings and played a fine knock of 63 off 45 balls before being trapped lbw at a total of 122, marking Pakistan’s fourth wicket.

Fakhar Zaman contributed 25 runs but was dismissed after getting a start.

Pakistan’s middle and lower order struggled to provide a strong finish.

Usman Khan fell for 8 with the score at 146, and Mohammad Nawaz was dismissed for a duck on the very next delivery.

Shaheen Shah Afridi managed 2 runs, while Shadab Khan added a valuable 23 runs before being dismissed.

Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Pakistan managed to reach 164/9, setting up an intriguing contest as England chase 165 for victory in this high-stakes Super 8 fixture.

 After losing two quick wickets, the remaining batters focused on rebuilding the innings and maintaining a steady scoring rate.

Openers Saim Ayub and Sahibzada Farhan walked out to start the innings, aiming to provide a brisk start.

However, Pakistan suffered an early setback in the third over when Saim Ayub was dismissed for 7 runs.

He was caught off Jofra Archer’s delivery, returning to the pavilion after a brief stay at the crease.

Soon after, Captain Salman Agha came in but failed to stabilize the innings.

He managed just 5 runs before being caught off Liam Dawson’s bowling, leaving Pakistan under early pressure.

With two wickets down inside the powerplay, Pakistan will now look to rebuild and regain momentum against a disciplined English bowling attack.

Earlier, Pakistan won the toss and selected to bat first against England in the high-stakes match.  

Pakistan have made one change to their playing XI, bringing in Shaheen Shah Afridi in place of Faheem Ashraf.

The team management opted to strengthen the bowling attack by including the left-arm pacer, as Pakistan look to deliver an improved performance in the crucial encounter.
