Islamabad airport included in government’s privatisation programme

The government has formally included Islamabad International Airport in its Airport Privatization Programme under a long-term concessional mode, the Privatization Commission announced on Saturday.

According to the commission, the government is considering multiple options for outsourcing airport operations in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore, including management contracts and long-term commercial concession agreements. The initiative is aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, improving service delivery, generating maximum revenue, and upgrading airport infrastructure.

The Privatization Commission said the program is designed to attract both domestic and international private sector investment. In this regard, the government has held constructive dialogue with institutions from valued partner countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, along with other international stakeholders.

Addressing recent media reports, the commission rejected claims suggesting the cancellation of any proposed agreement related to Islamabad International Airport. It clarified that reports alleging the cancellation of a lease agreement with the UAE are misleading and contrary to facts. “No agreement or lease has been signed for any airport, including Islamabad International Airport,” the commission stated.

The government has also decided to shift from a government-to-government framework to an open and competitive bidding process for the three major airports. Under this approach, all domestic and foreign investors will be provided a level playing field to participate in the bidding.

The commission emphasised that the decision carries no political or diplomatic considerations. It added that the competitive process for airport outsourcing will prioritise inclusivity and ensure equal opportunities for both local and foreign investors, including those from partner countries and beyond.

The Privatisation Commission reiterated its commitment to transparency and competitiveness as the airport privatisation process moves forward.
