Instagram introduces AI Transition to turn photos into animated story videos
Instagram has rolled out a new artificial intelligence-powered feature that allows users to transform still images into dynamic, animated Story sequences, marking another step in the platform’s push toward video-first content.
The feature, called “AI Transition,” enables users to select multiple photos and automatically generate smooth, morphing transitions between them. Instead of uploading static images or simple slideshows, users can now create a seamless video directly within Stories.
According to Meta, Instagram’s parent company, the tool works by generating intermediate frames between selected images, effectively stitching them into a fluid visual sequence. The final output appears as a video Story rather than a traditional photo carousel.
Users can access the feature by choosing two or more images from their gallery, after which the AI handles the transition process. The generated sequence can also be downloaded and shared as a Reel, offering a new way to produce video content without filming.
The update reflects Instagram’s broader strategy of integrating AI into content creation tools. The platform has already introduced features such as AI-generated stickers and text-based tools, gradually expanding automation across its ecosystem.
However, AI-based transition tools have shown mixed results across platforms. In some cases, morphing effects can produce visual distortions, including unnatural facial changes or unrealistic motion. Instagram has yet to release official sample outputs, leaving questions about the consistency and quality of the feature in everyday use.
With short-form video continuing to dominate social media feeds, the new tool is expected to lower the barrier for users to create engaging visual content. Whether it becomes a widely adopted storytelling feature or remains a novelty will likely depend on how natural and reliable the results appear to users.
