Inmate ‘tortured to death in Adiala Jail

November 24, 2022 01:56 AM

An inmate was allegedly tortured to death in Adiala Jail, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Wednesday.

Incidents of torture of prisoners in Adiala Jail continued unabated. Relatives of inmates have been making a litany of complaints but to no avail.

Ayaz, 23, was imprisoned on charges of robbery and, according to his relatives, he has been subjected to torture in jail that resulted in his death. However, the official denied any wrongdoing.

Footage showed the body bore torture marks. The bereaved family made an appeal to the high-ups to look into the matter. The body was shifted to DHQ Hospital for post-mortem and police said after the post-mortem report, action can be taken forward.

A couple of months ago, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) submitted a report on complaints of corruption and torture at Adiala Jail to the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

The court summoned the human rights secretary to appear in person and the chief justice warned the Adiala Jail superintendent of strict action if any prisoner complained of torture.

He said that political parties in the country made tall claims about human rights. “But these parties do nothing when they come to power,” he regretted. He vowed that the court would now take the matter to its logical conclusion.
