Pakistan to export 100,000 tonnes of rice to Bangladesh

Pakistan has begun formal preparations to export 100,000 metric tonnes of rice to Bangladesh as the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) issued a tender for procurement, officials said Monday.

The tender sets November 28 as the deadline for bid submissions, allowing a minimum offer of 25,000 tonnes and a maximum of 100,000 tonnes. Once awarded, the successful contractor will be required to ensure delivery within 45 days.

The rice will be shipped from Karachi Port, which Pakistan has also offered to Bangladesh for broader trade access with neighbouring countries, facilitating regional commercial cooperation.

Despite a 28% drop in rice exports during the first quarter of the current fiscal year, Pakistan has managed to retain market demand even as Indian exports have resumed. Trade analysts say Pakistan’s competitive position has been strengthened by the United States’ 50% tariff on Indian rice, creating additional space for Pakistani exporters.

Officials believe the upcoming Bangladesh shipment could help revive export momentum and improve Pakistan’s standing in regional grain markets.
