Trump praises Pakistan’s role in US-Iran peace talks
Describes PM Shehbaz as 'wonderful' and General Asim as 'fantastic'
US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that a planned American delegation visit to Pakistan was cancelled due to the long travel involved, as diplomatic efforts over the Iran-US conflict continue.
Speaking in a media interview, Trump remarked that it was not practical to undertake a 16 to 18-hour journey for meetings that could be handled remotely, emphasizing that such travel was unnecessary under the current circumstances.
He also made notable remarks about Pakistan’s leadership, describing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as “wonderful” and Pakistan’s army chief Syed Asim Munir as “fantastic.”
The US president further stated that Pakistan had played an important role in efforts to resolve the ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran, highlighting Islamabad’s involvement in facilitating dialogue.
Trump reiterated that the United States remained open to talks but suggested that direct travel was not necessary, adding that counterparts could initiate contact if they wished to move forward with negotiations.
The remarks come amid stalled diplomatic efforts and uncertainty surrounding future engagements between the United States and Iran, with Pakistan continuing to be viewed as a key mediator in the process.
