Woman declared dead in Nadra record appears alive before Sindh High Court

A bizarre case has surfaced in Karachi where a woman declared dead in National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) and Union Council records appeared alive before the Sindh High Court on Tuesday, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

The petitioner, identified as Safia Begum told the court that she had been declared deceased in official records and claimed that her death was being used to receive her late husband's pension.

According to her lawyer, Safia's husband had passed away and had three wives. Following Safia's alleged death confirmation in NADRA and Union Council records, the pension was reportedly being paid to the first wife.

During the hearing, the NADRA lawyer informed the court that the authority verifies records online and according to the Union Council's records, Safia Begum had died.

The court expressed concern over the matter and summoned Union Council Chairman Saleh Muhammad. However, the chairman neither appeared before the court nor submitted a written response despite being directed to do so.

The Sindh High Court subsequently issued Rs50,000 bailable arrest warrants against the Union Council chairman.

The court directed police to ensure the chairman's appearance at the next hearing and adjourned further proceedings until September 9.
