Kate Middleton and Princess Charlotte steal the show at Christmas carol concert

The Princess of Wales and her daughter Princess Charlotte shared a heartfelt musical moment that captivated viewers, performing a piano duet that aired during Kate’s much-anticipated Christmas carol concert on Christmas Eve.

The touching performance opened the festive programme Together at Christmas, which was broadcast on ITV1 and ITVX at 7.25pm.

The duet appeared alongside footage of guests arriving at Westminster Abbey for the service held on December 5, as well as a narration delivered by Kate herself, based on a letter presented to attendees.

Kate, 43, and her 10-year-old daughter performed Holm Sound by Scottish composer and producer Erland Cooper, who hails from the Orkney Islands.

The piece, inspired by themes of nature and human connection, closely reflects values that are particularly meaningful to the Princess of Wales. Cooper originally wrote the composition for his mother, Charlotte.

The duet was filmed last week in the Inner Hall at Windsor Castle, with Cooper present to join the royal pair during the recording.

Royal fans were quick to praise the performance, describing it as “absolutely beautiful” and saying it “brought tears to people's eyes.” Many also remarked on how proud Kate appeared while playing alongside her daughter.

One admirer commented: "Catherine the Princess of Wales knocks it out of the park with everything she does and she makes it seem so effortless. A lovely message to accompany the piano duet with Charlotte, superb."

Another added: "Prince William must be so proud of both his beautiful girls. Lovely lovely carol concert."

Earlier in the week, the Prince and Princess of Wales teased the performance on their joint Instagram account with a short, enigmatic video. The clip swept across a festively decorated room before focusing on two hands resting on a piano, one wearing a striking ring. The post was captioned: "A special duet..."

During the programme’s opening, Kate delivered a reflective voiceover about the meaning of Christmas, saying: "At its heart Christmas speaks of love taking form in the simplest most human ways.

"Not in sentimental or grand gestures. But gentle ones. A moment of listening. A word of comfort. A friendly conversation. A helping hand. Presents.

"These simple acts of care might seem small but they contribute to the beautiful tapestry of life to which we all belong.

"Christmas is a time which reminds us how deeply our lives are woven together. Just as the roots of trees share strength between the soil, unseen but vital, so too do we.

"We are drawn by an instinctive pull towards belonging and connection.

"At a time when life can sometimes feel fragmented or uncertain, the Christmas season invites us to remember the power of reaching out to one another with generosity of heart, understanding and hope.

"This carol service offers a moment of collective togetherness, a chance to celebrate the spirit of community and service and to honour the visible and invisible bonds which unite us all.

"The time, care and compassion you give often quietly and unspoken and without any expectation or recognition make an extraordinary difference to the lives of others.

"As the year draws to a close I hope this season brings you moments of peace and clarity and that you too feel surrounded by the same love and care which you offer so freely.

Actress Vicky McClure, known for her roles in Trigger Point and Line of Duty, narrated the remainder of the service following Kate’s introduction.

The programme continued with performances of Once in Royal David's City and A Sussex Carol by the Westminster Abbey choir, followed by an address from The Very Reverend Dr David Hoyle, the 39th Dean of Westminster.

Prince William read from the second chapter of the Gospel of Luke before an audience of 1,600 guests. Other attendees included Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, as well as Mike and Zara Tindall.

Actress Kate Winslet, 50, delivered a reading entitled A reflection of love and connection, while musical performances were provided by Hannah Waddingham, Katie Melua, Dan Smith, Griff and Cornish folk group Fisherman’s Friends.

The broadcast also featured two short community films. One highlighted an artist from Fleetwood, Lancashire, who hosts a Christmas dinner for people who would otherwise be alone, while the second showcased students from London’s Platinum Performing Arts, who also took part in the service.

This was not Kate’s first time performing at a festive concert.

In 2021, she played the piano at a Westminster Abbey service, accompanying singer Tom Walker during a candlelit rendition of his Christmas single For Those Who Can't Be Here.

Despite reportedly feeling “quite nervous,” the performance earned widespread acclaim, with some observers noting similarities to Princess Diana, who famously surprised audiences with her own piano performance during a 1988 visit to Australia.

In addition to the concert, newly released photographs from Tuesday captured tender family moments at the carol service, including sweet interactions between Kate and Prince Louis. Fans were delighted by the previously unseen images of the Princess with her three children at the annual event.

The strong family bond was evident as Princess Charlotte attended alongside Prince William, 43, and her brothers, Prince George, 12, and Prince Louis, seven.

The family coordinated their outfits in navy and green, with the boys in tailored suits and Charlotte wearing a blue dress with a white collar that complemented her mother’s emerald ensemble.

Kate was seen smiling proudly as she guided her children toward Westminster Abbey, pausing as they admired the festive lights outside. Inside, she helped Louis steady a candle while holding the order of service, later leaning in to speak softly to her youngest son as he grinned mischievously.

Kate’s close relationship with Charlotte was especially apparent throughout the evening.

The mother and daughter beamed when they spotted each other outside the Abbey, with Kate immediately reaching out to embrace her. As they entered the Abbey together, the Princess of Wales was repeatedly photographed gazing affectionately at her daughter, underscoring their warm and affectionate bond.
