Trump praises Indian cricketers ‘Soo-chin Tendul-kerr’, ‘V-rot’

February 25, 2020 01:49 PM

US President Donald Trump gave a special mention to cricket greats Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli during a visit to India on Monday - but it was probably the first time he had spoken their names.

In a speech at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad -- the world's largest cricket stadium -- Trump incorrectly pronounced the name of India's greatest ever player as "Soo-chin Tendul-kerr".

He almost scored with Kohli, whose first name came out as "V-rot ", slightly off "V-rut".

Cricket's governing body, the International Cricket Council, jokingly asked on its Twitter account whether anyone knew if "Sooch-", "Sutch-", or other variations of Tendulkar's first name were correct.

Trump said the stadium was "where your people cheer on some of the world's greatest cricket players from Sachin Tendulkar to Virat Kohli," bringing a smile to the lips of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and applause from the crowd.

The US president also tripped over other words, including Ahmedabad ("Ahba-bard") and tea-seller chaiwalla ("cheewalla"), and he himself chuckled at his attempt to pronounce the name of Hindu monk Swami Vivekananda ("Swami Vivekamandan").

Trump was all over Twitter after delivering his much-anticipated speech while addressing a staggering crowd at the Motera Stadium. The US President addressed several topics in his speech and recognized several topics ranging from Bollywood to cricket in his coveted speech.

However, one instance that caught the eye of all the cricket fanatics was Trump’s pronunciation of Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli in his speech. He fumbled to enunciate the names of two cricket stalwarts of India.

Twitter, in no time, was flooded with hilarious memes targetting Trump’s failure in pronouncing the names of Sachin and Kohli. Former English skipper Michael Vaughan also followed the trend at shared a hilarious tweet in the wake of Trump’s mispronunciation. “Can’t wait for @realDonaldTrump to visit Pakistan & see how he pronounces Fakhar Zaman ..!!!,” tweeted Vaughan.

Many hilarious posts have been circulating across the internet post Trump’s speech at the Motera Stadium. From ICC to Kevin Pietersen– all have been busy in taking a dig at Trump’s funny attempt to pronounce Indian cricketers’ name. Earlier in the day, Vaughan had dished out another tweet in an attempt to take a dig at Sachin Tendulkar. “How are you today Sue Chin @sachin_rt !!!! #DonaldTrumpIndiaVisit,” Vaughan had tweeted.

After Trump’s visit to the Motera Stadium, the US President, along with his wife and first lady Melania, headed towards Agra to stop by the Taj Mahal. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also presented a large portrait of ‘Taj Mahal’ to Trump and his wife before they headed back to Delhi.
