A 16-year-old boy who was arrested outside a mosque in western Scotland has been charged with terror offences, police said on Friday.

The youth was held after police were called to the Inverclyde Islamic Centre in Greenock, northwest of Glasgow, on Thursday morning.

In a short statement, Police Scotland said that the teenager "has been charged with terrorism offences" and was expected to appear in court in the town on Monday.

No further details were given. Police said on Thursday that a second teenager, also aged 16, was arrested "in connection with a separate terrorism offence" in the Greenock area.

He was later released without charges, pending further enquiries, officers added.
