Netflix’s ‘13 Going on 30’ reboot sparks fan firestorm with Lerman and  Bader

Netflix has confirmed a fresh take on the beloved rom-com 13 Going on 30, starring Logan Lerman and Emily Bader. While some viewers are curious about the new cast, many fans question whether the classic Jennifer Garner film should be revisited at all.

More than two decades after the original release, 13 Going on 30 is set to return to the spotlight with a modern “reimagining” rather than a direct remake. Netflix announced on social media:

"Thirty, flirty, and thriving… Emily Bader and Logan Lerman will star in 13 GOING ON 30, a new reboot of the 2004 classic. Executive produced by Jennifer Garner and directed by Brett Haley (People We Meet on Vacation)."

The announcement sparked a wave of reactions online. Many fans expressed skepticism, arguing that some classics are best left untouched. On Reddit, one fan wrote, “I really loved the original, and this just feels unnecessary.

Can we leave some films alone?” Another commented, “Stop the reboots! Just do a new idea! Also, are we really going to contend with the ickiness of a 13-year-old in a sexualized 30-year-old body?”

Some even questioned the casting of Logan Lerman, sparking heated debates across social media.

The original 2004 film starred Jennifer Garner as Jenna Rink and Mark Ruffalo as her childhood best friend. The story follows 13-year-old Jenna, who wishes to skip adolescence and become “thirty, flirty, and thriving.”

Her wish unexpectedly comes true, and she wakes up as a grown woman living in New York while working as a magazine editor.

Director Brett Haley, known for People We Meet on Vacation, shared his excitement about the project in a statement to Deadline:

"13 Going on 30 is one of those rare, perfect films—funny, emotional, and deeply human, with unforgettable performances from Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, and Judy Greer. I’m a longtime fan, so stepping into this reimagining comes with tremendous responsibility."

He also highlighted the significance of Garner returning as executive producer:

"Jennifer Garner being on board, after playing such a big part in making the original special, is especially meaningful. I’m thrilled to work with Emily Bader again, and with Logan Lerman, they make a magical pairing. I feel incredibly lucky to be trusted with something so beloved."

Fans will soon see how this reimagined version introduces the classic tale to a new generation, while opinions remain divided on whether the original magic can truly be recaptured.
