US considers resuming nuclear tests, raising fears of global arms race

Concerns over a renewed global arms race have intensified after reports that the United States is considering resuming underground nuclear weapons testing, a move that could have far-reaching implications for international security, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Wednesday.

According to a senior official from the US State Department, the review is being carried out under the direction of President Donald Trump, with discussions focusing on the possibility of restarting underground nuclear tests after decades of restraint.

The development was disclosed by Thomas DiNanno, the Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security, during a briefing to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

He informed lawmakers that the administration is actively evaluating the strategic and technical aspects of resuming such tests.

The prospect of renewed testing has sparked alarm among arms control advocates, who warn that any move by Washington to restart nuclear tests could undermine the global non-proliferation framework that has been in place for years.

They caution that it may prompt other nuclear-armed states, including Russia and China, to follow suit.
