OGRA denies gas tariff hike, says old rates unchanged
Spokesperson clarifies no approval given for higher gas tariffs: Insists revenue needs met without raising consumer prices
The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) on Tuesday clarified that it has not approved any increase in gas tariffs and that the previously notified rates remain unchanged.
According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, the clarification was issued after several television channels and online platforms reported that the authority had raised gas prices instead of reducing them.
According to an OGRA spokesperson, the impression created by certain news outlets regarding gas price determination was “incorrect and misleading”.
The spokesperson reiterated that no change of any kind had been approved in the existing tariff structure and that the authority had maintained the old rates.
The spokesperson added that OGRA had observed misleading reports on multiple news channels suggesting that gas prices had been revised upward.
The spokesperson stated that, as per the latest determination dated November 24, 2025, the revenue requirements set for the financial year 2025–26 were fully met by the existing income generated from the operational networks of SNGPL and SSGC. Therefore, the authority found no need to alter consumer gas prices.
The clarification came a day after reports claimed that OGRA had approved an increase of up to 7.14 percent in gas tariffs for the current financial year.
Media reports said that for Sui Southern Gas Company, the regulator had allegedly allowed a rise of Rs118.47 per MMBTU, taking the new tariff to Rs1,777.02 per MMBTU, while Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited was reported to have received an increase of 4.89 percent, or Rs86.30 per MMBTU, raising its tariff to Rs1,852.80 per MMBTU.
Earlier, OGRA had permitted a Rs60.88 billion adjustment for gas companies to address their shortfall, and at one point, the authority had claimed that an average reduction of 8 percent in gas prices had been worked out.
OGRA had previously issued statements to the media regarding the earlier assessment of reduced gas tariffs, but the authority now maintains that the existing consumer rates remain unchanged.
