PM Shehbaz updates UN chief on growing terrorism threats from Afghan soil

Prime Minister Shehbaz held detailed talks with outgoing UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly session in New York on Thursday night, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

In a post uploaded on X platform on Friday, PM Shehbaz Sharif said “As always, it was a pleasure to meet UN Secretary-General António Guterres, whose steadfast commitment to the UN Charter and the cause of peace I deeply value.”

He said “We had a wide-ranging exchange on the serious challenges confronting our region and the world. I reiterated Pakistan’s firm belief that dialogue and diplomacy must remain our path to resolving conflicts and restoring peace, particularly in the Middle East.”

“I also reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and statehood, and shared our concerns over rising Islamophobia, as well as the growing threat of terrorism emanating from Afghan soil,” he said and added “I thanked the Secretary-General for his appreciation of Pakistan’s contributions to international peace and security, our sacrifices in the fight against terrorism, and our ongoing efforts to promote dialogue and durable peace in the region.”

PM, Lebanon counterpart review ties

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam of the Lebanese Republic on sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Thursday and they reviewed bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the longstanding and fraternal relations between Pakistan and Lebanon.

They also exchanged views on the developments in the Middle East and the wider region.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast support for Lebanon’s sovereignty, political independence, unity and territorial integrity.

He called for immediate cessation of hostilities, strict adherence to ceasefire arrangements, complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied Lebanese territory and full implementation of UN Security Council resolutions.

The two sides discussed ways to further enhance bilateral cooperation, including through high-level exchanges, trade and investment, defence and institutional linkages. They reaffirmed the importance of continued coordination at the United Nations and other multilateral fora.
