PMA vows to intensify protest against privatization of public health institutions
A meeting of the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Punjab’s joint action committee against privatization, held here on Saturday via Zoom, took various decisions to press the government for its demands.
The meeting was attended by committee members along with the presidents of PMA chapters from all districts across Punjab.
The meeting approved several resolutions unanimously.
Firstly, the participants commended the ongoing boycott of outpatient department (OPD) services across the province, as well as the rallies and press conferences organized at the district level to express solidarity with the Grand Health Alliance (GHA).
The meeting emphasized that in districts where these activities had yet to take place, immediate efforts must be made to mobilize and strengthen the movement to ensure a unified and impactful campaign.
Secondly, PMA Punjab issued a strong warning to health officials, particularly Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and Medical Superintendents (MSs), accused of taking retaliatory actions against health workers involved in the protests.
The association cautioned that if such practices are not immediately halted, it would be compelled to initiate a strong response, which could include protest rallies and sit-ins outside the offices of the concerned officials.
Moreover, PMA Punjab announced its full support for the Grand Health Alliance’s planned march and sit-in at the Chief Minister’s House, scheduled for later in April 2025.
Citing the government’s apathetic and undemocratic attitude, the association stated that a detailed action plan for the protest would soon be finalized in consultation with GHA leadership.
Additionally, the session resolved to launch a robust public awareness campaign against the privatization of public hospitals.
The campaign will actively utilize national electronic media, print publications, and social media platforms to educate the public and rally wider support.
Practical measures will be undertaken to ensure the campaign’s effectiveness and reach.
