Karachi Industrial Park planned as new special economic zone

The Ministry of Planning and Development has announced a major initiative to establish a Karachi Industrial Park under a federal special economic zone framework, aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s industrial base and boosting economic growth.

According to official sources, the strategic project has been designed to promote modern industries, enhance production capacity and support long-term sustainable development. It falls under the “Uraan Pakistan” programme and will be funded through the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP).

Officials said the industrial park will be developed with improved infrastructure, including access through ports, roads and logistics networks, which is expected to enhance export opportunities and facilitate international trade.

The project will support the establishment of technology-driven industrial units, improving production standards and promoting the growth of local industry. It is also expected to create a large number of job opportunities for both skilled and unskilled workers.

Authorities said the initiative will provide a favourable environment for both local and foreign investors, offering incentives and secure business opportunities. It is also expected to increase foreign exchange earnings through improved access to global markets.

The project aims to expand industrial capacity and strengthen Pakistan’s position in international trade by increasing exports and creating new business opportunities that contribute to overall economic stability.

A total area of 1,500 acres has been allocated for development, with an estimated cost of Rs7.4 billion. The project received approval in February 2025, and officials say formal approval has paved the way for accelerated implementation.
