Pakistan U-16s make historic UEFA debut despite 4-1 defeat to Kazakhstan

Pakistan’s Under-16 football team marked a historic milestone by making their debut at a UEFA youth competition, despite suffering a 4-1 defeat to hosts Kazakhstan in the UEFA Under-16 Development Tournament in Shymkent on Saturday.

Playing at the BIIK Sports Complex, Pakistan struggled in the first half as Kazakhstan took early control of the match.

Platon Shipstin opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the seventh minute, before Anuar Tolendi doubled the lead with a counterattacking goal in the 21st minute.

Kazakhstan captain David Zarechnyy extended the advantage in the 30th minute following a defensive lapse, while Daniyar Kassi made it 4-0 with a header in first-half stoppage time.

Pakistan showed improved composure after the break, delivering a more organised and spirited performance. Captain Abdul Samad scored his side’s only goal with a powerful header, converting a precise cross from Muhammad Hanzala.

Head coach Mohammed Essa said the match represented an important learning opportunity for his young squad.

“This is a learning experience for the team, as it is the first time a Pakistan side is participating in a UEFA competition,” he said, adding that the players responded positively after a difficult first half.

Pakistan will next face Russia on Monday, aiming to build on their improved second-half display in their historic first appearance at a UEFA development tournament.
