Sanjay Dutt revives ‘Khalnayak’ role after three decades with fresh take

More than three decades after the release of the Bollywood hit film Khalnayak, actor Sanjay Dutt is set to return to one of his most iconic roles, though in what he describes as a reimagined project rather than a conventional sequel, 24NewsHD TV reported.

Speaking at an event in Mumbai, Dutt said the upcoming film would present a fresh narrative and a unique treatment of the character, distancing it from a traditional continuation of the original storyline.

A recently released teaser shows Dutt in a more hardened and aged avatar, suggesting that while the character has evolved with time, its intensity remains intact.

The actor also shared a glimpse of his new look on social media, formally announcing the project with the message: “Every story has its time — and now it’s back.”

Dutt said the idea gained momentum after he sought feedback from about 4,000 inmates during his stay at a prison, many of whom expressed interest in seeing the character return.

He said reviewing their written responses took considerable time but helped shape his thinking about the project.

The actor later discussed the concept with Subhash Ghai, the director of the original film, who has backed the new venture.

Released in the 1990s, Khalnayak was a major commercial success and featured an ensemble cast including Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit.

The revival of the film is expected to draw significant attention, as audiences await a modern reinterpretation of one of Bollywood’s most memorable anti-hero characters.
