Nothing in Trump’s India visit for Pakistan to celebrate

Almost all Pakistani newspapers have highlighted US President Trump’s reiteration of his mediation offer on Kashmir during his India visit.

He has been quoted as saying: "We talked a lot about it at length today. No question it is a problem. They are working on it. I said I will do whatever I can do to help because my relationship with both gentlemen [Prime Minister Imran Khan and Indian PM Narendra Modi] is so good. Anything I can do to mediate, I would do," he said.

"They [Pakistan] are working on Kashmir. Kashmir has been a thorn in lots of people's sides for a long time. There are two sides to every story. We discussed terrorism at length today," he added.

However, when pressed further by another reporter about India's past rejection of his offers, Trump said: "I didn't say anything about that [being a mediator]. Kashmir obviously is a big problem between India and Pakistan; they are going to work out their problem. They have been doing it for a long time."

From Pakistan’s point of view, this was the most important part of the US president’s 36-hour visit. That the US and India signed a $3billion military equipment deal and that there was no agreement on trade is their internal matter.

It’s a matter of great satisfaction for Pakistan that President talked of his country’s good relations with the Islamic Republic and also recognized its anti-terrorism efforts.

"Our relationship with Pakistan is a very good one. Thanks to these efforts, we are beginning to see signs of big progress with Pakistan and we are hopeful for reduced tensions, greater stability and the future of harmony for all of the nations of South Asia," Trump had said on the first day of his India visit.

However, there is no cause for any jubilation in Pakistan.

Pakistan wants the Kashmir dispute resolved in accordance with the UN resolutions. The US president did not say anything on these lines.

India has already categorically rejected any mediation offer from any side, calling the Kashmir issue an internal matter.

Indian Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar has already said: "There is no role for any third party in the Kashmir issue. It is a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan."

Hypothetically speaking, it would not have been helpful to Pakistan even if India had accepted the mediation offer. President Trump is anti-Muslim and he cannot be expected to do anything that favours Pakistan at the cost of India, a majority Hindu state.

The US president’s all-out support to the Israeli government which is brutally targeting the Palestinian Muslims struggling for their legitimate rights is an open secret. The so-called peace plan given recently by him to resolve the Palestinian problem is in fact a formula to deprive the Palestinians of all their rights.

Fortunately, it has been rejected by the Arab League and the OIC, despite the fact that some important Islamic countries are trying to improve their ties with the Jewish state, putting the Baitul Maqdas, a matter of faith for all Muslims, on the backburner.

Another point from Pakistan’s point of view is that the US president did not say anything about the situation the people of Occupied Kashmir have been facing since August 2019, when India annexed the territory ignoring its ‘disputed’ status and the repeated calls for the solution of the Kashmir problem in accordance with the UN resolutions.

Media projects every day the kind of atrocities the eight million besieged Kashmiris are being subjected to. The champions of human rights did not urge India to treat the Kashmiris as human beings.

His address to the Ahmedabad rally also needs to be deeply looked into.

President Trump said: “It is your faith in the strength of a free society, your confidence in your own people, your trust in your own citizens, and your respect for the dignity of every person that makes the United States and India such a natural, beautiful, enduring friendship.

“Respect for the dignity of every person” referred to in the speech is enough to explain the ‘importance’ the US gives to the people of occupied Kashmir despite August 5 drastic steps taken by India.

He further said: “There is all the difference in the world between a nation that seeks power through coercion, intimidation, and aggression, and a nation that rises by setting its people free and unleashing them to chase their dreams. And that is India”.

There is nothing for Pakistan to celebrate after President Trump’s visit.  The two countries are enemies of Muslims and will remain so in future.
