Ahsan Bhoon replaces Akhtar Hussain as JCP member

Senior lawyer and former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Ahsan Bhoon has been elected as the new member of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), replacing Akhtar Hussain, who resigned earlier this week.

According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, Ahsan Bhoon was elected as the PBC representative for a two-year term after securing 14 out of 19 votes in a meeting chaired by Attorney General of Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan on Wednesday.

The Pakistan Bar Council’s central and provincial members participated in the voting process, where Ahsan Bhoon secured 14 votes, and four members opposed his nomination while one member abstained from the voting process.

With a strong majority, Ahsan Bhoon is set to represent the Pakistan Bar Council in the Judicial Commission for the next two years.

Ahsan Bhoon’s election comes after Advocate Akhtar Hussain’s sudden resignation on Monday, February 24.

Sources told 24NewsHD TV that Akhtar Hussain resigned due to his dissatisfaction with the appointment process of new judges in the Supreme Court.

In his resignation letter to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Yahya Afridi, Akhtar Hussain stated that he was unable to continue due to disagreements over recent judicial appointments.

He wrote, "The Pakistan Bar Council unanimously nominated me thrice as a member of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan. However, due to ongoing controversies regarding judicial appointments, I am unable to continue and, hereby, resign as a member of JCP."

Despite stepping down, Hussain expressed his commitment to supporting judicial and democratic institutions.
