Seven deaths reported as heavy monsoon rain lashed different parts of Punjab, including Lahore, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday, bringing respite to the people suffering due to intense heat and humidity for the last couple of weeks and prompting the Punjab government to put the provincial control room as well as district emergency operation centers on a high alert, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.   

Besides Lahore, rain was reported from Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Khushab and other cities of Punjab. 

Showers were also reported from Karak and other parts of KP besides the central and eastern areas of Balochistan.   

Met Office forecasts more rains

The Met Office said that the current spell of monsoon rains would continue until July 1, while the next rain-producing system would enter the country on July 15. 

It said 25 per cent more rains were expected this year, due to which there were risks of urban flooding. 

It said that heavy rain, accompanied by strong winds, would pound the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, different areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Karachi, Sukkur, Hyderabad and other districts in Sindh during the next 12 hours. 

Similarly, the Met Office predicted thundershowers and strong gales for different areas of KP, Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Sialkot and other districts of Punjab during the aforementioned period. 

NDMA, PDMA issue alert

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) alerted the people that they should avoid travelling to mountainous areas of KP and AJK during the inclement weather since there were risks of landslides in these areas.  

They urged people to stay away from crumbling walls, trees and electric poles during the rains.

They also asked the concerned departments to remain on their toes.

People were advised to seek weather updates from the Disaster Alert App. 

The PDMA directed all deputy commissioners in Punjab to remain alert.

The Authority said that the people could dial the helpline number 1129 in case of an emergency.

PDMA DG Irfan Ali Kathia said that the situation was being monitored from the control room 24/7. 

He urged the drainage of the rainwater from low-lying areas.

He also advised the people to stay away from electric poles and wires. “Keep an eye on your children so that they do not go near low-lying areas during the rain,” Kathia urged. 

Six deaths reported

Six people died and dozens of others injured in rain-related incidents in Punjab.

Three young girls died in roof collapse incidents in Chunian and Okara. In the Talwandi area of Chunian, the roof of a house collapsed due to continuous rain. Two young girls were buried under the rubble and died on the spot.

In another roof collapse incident in Okara’s Bangla Gogira area, the roof of a mudhouse collapsed on a group of girls studying in a room. One girl died while two others were injured.

In Bahawalnagar, roof of another mudhouse caved in due to the rain, resulting in the death of a 4-year-old child.

A young man died and another was injured after lightning struck their area during rain in Khanewal. The injured victim was rushed to a hospital for treatment.

A man drowned in a rain drain in Sohawa area of Jhelum.

Over 320 LESCO feeders trip

The supply of electricity to different parts of Lahore was disrupted after over 320 feeders of Lahore tripped due to heavy rain that lashed the provincial capital on Thursday.

Several localities in the city are without power for the last five hours. 

Amount of rainfall recorded in Lahore

On average, 22.5 millimeters of rain was recorded in Lahore.

The highest amount of rainfall 58 millimeters was recorded in Nishtar Town.

It was followed by Tajpura (42 mm), Mughalpura (34 mm), Upper Mall (27 mm), Lahore Airport (24 mm), Gulberg (17 mm), Lakshmi Chowk (15 mm), Chowk Nakhuda (28 mm), Allama Iqbal Town (20 mm), Qurtaba Chowk (14 mm) and Johar Town (13 mm)
