I pray I never receive one: Usman Peerzada on civil awards
Veteran Pakistani actor Usman Peerzada has stirred thoughtful discussion online after candidly sharing his views on civil awards, public recognition, and cultural identity.
During a recent podcast appearance, the senior actor revealed that he never desired a state honour, saying the love and appreciation of the audience have always been enough for him.
Appearing on the podcast Koi Reh Tu Nahi Gaya hosted by Shahzad Nawaz, Usman Peerzada openly discussed the growing controversy surrounding civil awards in Pakistan.
During the conversation, he stated: “Civil awards have become so controversial now. My father received one, and my younger brother also received one. I pray to Allah that I never receive one, so I never have to explain my position regarding it.”
The veteran actor further shared that the greatest reward for an artist comes directly from the public rather than official recognition.
He said: “The award we truly deserved, we already received from the public. When someone sees me and a smile appears on their face, that love and affection mean everything because you have given them the pleasure of watching your work.”

Host Shahzad Nawaz then remarked that the state is often considered like a mother and questioned why that love and recognition for artists sometimes feels absent.
Responding to this, Usman Peerzada reflected on the confusion surrounding cultural identity in society.

He added: “This society has remained confused about culture for a very long time, and that is the real issue. If you start redefining culture from the very beginning, then what will actually remain of your own identity?”
