Uncertainty looms over AJK govt as PPP eyes in-house change
PM Anwar-ul-Haq expected to decide within 48 hours whether to resign or face a no-confidence motion: Barrister Sultan put forward demands for his group's support
Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) is witnessing intense political manoeuvring as speculation grows over whether Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq will resign or face a possible no-confidence motion in the coming days.
According to 24NewsHD TV channel, a crucial decision from the AJK premier is expected within the next 48 hours.
Political sources said that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has accelerated efforts to secure a majority in the 52-member AJK Legislative Assembly by reaching out to members of a forward bloc reportedly consisting of 20 legislators.
The party requires the support of at least 27 members to form the government.
As part of its strategy, the PPP has established contact with the group led by President Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry, seeking their cooperation for government formation.
However, according to insiders, the Sultan Mahmood group has put forward a key political demand in return for their support, the position of Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.
The group is reportedly insisting that one of its close associates be elected to the Speaker’s post.
The demand has gained particular importance because, under AJK’s constitutional framework, the Speaker acts as the acting President in the absence of the head of state.
Sources further revealed that President Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry is preparing to travel abroad for medical treatment, a development that has increased the political significance of the Speaker’s office.
Meanwhile, PPP leader Faryal Talpur is expected to visit Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry’s residence later today, where she will hold detailed consultations on potential power-sharing arrangements and in-house change strategies.
She is also likely to meet members elected from the refugees’ seats to garner their backing.
The PPP leadership is reportedly working to secure the support of the forward bloc to ensure a smooth transition of power in case the no-confidence motion is tabled.
