Travel boost as Parachinar Airport reopens after years of inactivity

Parachinar Airport in the Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has been restored and made operational again after remaining inactive for a long period, following joint efforts by the Pakistan Army, the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) and the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA).

The 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Monday that the reopening followed airport upgrade work carried out by the Frontier Works Organisation.

On 26 April, Pakistan Army Aviation successfully conducted operational landing and take-off trials at the site.

Officials said the airport, located in the Parachinar area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, had remained out of service for many years.

After recent renovation and modernisation work, it has now entered a new phase of activity.

The repair and rebuilding of Parachinar Airport is seen as an important step towards restoring air transport links in the region.

During the trials on 26 April 2026, Pakistan Army Aviation assessed the quality of construction work, runway performance and overall readiness for operations.

A total of six successful landings and take-offs were completed. As a result, the runways were declared to meet professional standards and high safety requirements.

During the exercises, all the Parachinar airport systems and runway performance were tested under different operational conditions.

Following the successful trials, the airport is expected to become more firmly operational, bringing better regional connections, faster emergency response, stronger economic activity and promotion of tourism.
