Meghan Markle calls for recognition as a real person amid media scrutiny

The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has opened up about the challenges of living under constant public scrutiny, urging fans and critics alike to remember that she is “a real person.” Speaking with Emily Chang on The Circuit, part of Bloomberg Originals, Meghan reflected on the pressures of fame and the impact of clickbait culture on her daily life.

Meghan admitted that despite her royal and public persona, she often feels overwhelmed by how the media portrays her. “I think when I sit with it for a second here, I just want people to know that I'm a real person,” she said, emphasising that the human side of her life is often lost in sensational headlines.

She expressed frustration over the dehumanising aspects of media coverage, noting how it affects not just her but also her family and friends. “When you look at the clickbait culture and how much is written about someone, it's like, no, my friends have to read those things,” Meghan shared. She stressed that she has had the same close friends since she was 17 and wants people to recognise the normal, everyday relationships she maintains.

The Duchess also highlighted her role as a mother and the everyday responsibilities that come with it. “I'm a real mom. I have to go, I choose to go and do school pickup and drop off, but I do that under a landscape that is created that forgets that I'm a real person,” she said, describing the tension between her public image and her personal life.

Meghan urged the public to consider empathy when discussing public figures. “And how would you want someone to treat a real person in your life that you cared about or loved or respected? And so there's something about that, I think, that often gets lost,” she noted.

She acknowledged that while she sometimes tries to compartmentalise the negativity by referring to it as a “caricature,” the reality remains that her children and family are exposed to media gossip. “Yes. But my kids will see those magazines and we all know moms gossip. And so I have to make a choice to move through the world as myself in spite of all the noise that's created,” Meghan said.

The Duchess’s candid reflections resonate with many who feel the pressures of living life in the public eye or under social media scrutiny. By highlighting the human side of her experience, Meghan Markle encourages fans and critics to consider the personal impact of their words and actions.

As one of the most talked-about figures in modern royalty, Meghan Markle’s statements serve as a reminder of the person behind the headlines. Her emphasis on relatability, family, and everyday responsibilities provides a rare glimpse into the challenges she faces while maintaining dignity, privacy, and authenticity in a highly publicised life.
