Police in Bosnia said Thursday eight people have been arrested for  involvement in suspected human trafficking, after 31 children were rescued during a raid.

Police said the children were found in an operation at an undisclosed location in the northeastern district of Brcko this week.

After arresting three people initially, police said five more suspects alleged to have participated in child trafficking were taken into custody, according to a statement.

Bosnian police said they were working with European the law enforcement agency Europol on the case.

According to local media, the children were being held in a facility described as a "house of horrors" in Brcko, where babies under one year of age were among those found.

Police in neighbouring Croatia said six of the children had Croatian papers, which authorities were working to verify. The children had not been reported missing in Croatia, police said.
