Six dead in 24 hours as monsoon havoc continues

Six more people have lost their lives in the country during the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll in rain-related incidents since the onset of the monsoon season on June 26 to 271, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Sunday.  

According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), four people have been killed in Balochistan while two in Punjab.

As many as 655 people have also been injured in different incidents.

Giving further details, the Authority has said that 121 cattle have perished in Punjab while 209 homes have been destroyed. 

As many as 10 people have so far lost their lives due to floods in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).

Meanwhile, relief and rescue activities are underway in the affected areas, while the spokesman for the GB government Faizullah Firaq has said that the region has suffered losses worth over Rs20 billion due to floods and has demanded the federal government release a grant in order to make up for these losses.

On the other hand, the body of the woman who had drowned in the River Indus in Chilas was recovered on Sunday. 

Tourists get stuck in Diamer 

Several tourists are stranded in Fairy Meadows in Diamer, Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) as different parts of the region are closed for traffic due to landslides and flooding.

On the other hand, Pakistan Army helicopters are busy airlifting the tourists and taking them to safe locations. 

Flood in River Chenab at Jhang 

Meanwhile, a flood-like situation persists in River Chenab at Jhang as the flow of water at Trimmu Barrage has been recorded at 74,910 cusecs.

There is two feet of water in Maghyana village and the water has inundated crops.    

Flood situation in River Indus

Meanwhile, the River Indus is in medium flood at Taunsa Barrage, while in low flood at Tarbela, Kalabagh, Chashma, Guddu and Sukkur. 

More rains forecast

More rains are expected in different parts of the country from today until July 31 under the impact of a fresh monsoon system. 

According to the Met Office, rains are likely in Lahore, the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Murree, Galyat, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Sialkot, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Sahiwal and Jhang. 

Similarly, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, Khanewal, Multan and Muzaffargarh are also expected to receive showers.

The Met Office said that the rains and the melting of glaciers could result in flooding in streams and nullahs.  

Weather in next 24 hours

The Met Office has said that although dry and humid weather is expected in most parts of the country during the next 24 hours; however, thundershowers are expected at a few places in Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, upper KP, Islamabad, Potohar region of the Punjab and south-eastern Sindh.
