10 bodies recovered as flash flood sweeps away 19 in Swat

A devastating flash flood in Swat on Friday swept away 19 people, including tourists, as torrential rains triggered a surge in the Swat River, leaving a trail of tragedy across the scenic valley, 24NewsHD TV reported.

According to officials, more than 80 people were trapped in different locations due to the sudden flooding. So far, 57 have been rescued, while bodies of at least 10 victims have been recovered.

Rescue operations are ongoing at five critical sites, with hopes fading for the missing as hours pass.

The most harrowing incident occurred in the Bypass Fizagat area, where 18 tourists drowned. Only three have been rescued alive, while eight bodies have now been retrieved. Seven individuals remain missing from that location, as confirmed by Rescue 1122. A woman’s body was the latest to be recovered from the Bypass site.

Director General of KP Rescue 1122, Dr. Shah Fahad, confirmed that 80 personnel were actively engaged in the operation, despite the dangerous conditions caused by the river’s swelling.

“The rescue operation is being conducted at five different locations. Our teams are putting their lives at risk to recover those missing,” he said in a press release.

The Pak Army has also deployed troops to flood-hit areas to assist in the relief efforts. Alongside the military and Rescue 1122, police and local volunteers are also participating actively in the search operations.

Swat Rescue 1122 Spokesperson Niaz Khan earlier reported that the sudden rise in river water had created a dangerous current, catching many off-guard.

“Several reports of people being swept away came in at once. The river had turned into a roaring force within minutes,” he said.

Despite the intense rainfall, water flow in the Swat River has now decreased to around 60,000 cusecs, offering a slight relief to rescue workers, though conditions remain critical.

PM, Interior Minister express grief and sorrow

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed profound grief over the loss of lives and issued a statement of condolence to the families of the victims.

“My heart goes out to the families who lost their loved ones in this tragedy. May Allah grant the departed souls eternal peace and the families strength to bear this irreparable loss,” the Prime Minister said.

He directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and other concerned departments to accelerate rescue operations and implement safety measures on rivers and canals to prevent such tragedies in the future.

The premier also praised Rescue 1122 teams for their bravery and commitment, especially in managing to save three lives under extremely dangerous circumstances.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also expressed his sorrow over the incident.

“We share the grief of the bereaved families and offer our heartfelt condolences. The loss of precious lives is a national tragedy,” Naqvi said.

He emphasised the need for improving early warning systems and enhancing public safety awareness in vulnerable regions, particularly in tourist-heavy areas during the monsoon season.

This disaster adds to a growing list of deadly flooding incidents across Pakistan, as seasonal rains have intensified river flows and caused multiple drownings in recent weeks.

Authorities have repeatedly warned of climate-induced weather extremes and the urgent need for better flood management infrastructure and public preparedness.
