Ruling coalition gains two-thirds majority after Supreme Court verdict

The political dynamics in the National Assembly have shifted significantly following a Supreme Court decision that reinstated 77 reserved seats—22 of them in the Lower House.

With this development, the ruling coalition now holds a two-thirds majority, greatly enhancing its legislative authority.

Following the restoration, the ruling alliance's strength in the 336-member assembly has grown from 213 to 232 seats. This expanded majority positions the government to pass key constitutional amendments and legislation with minimal opposition.

Seat distribution post-verdict

Out of the 22 restored reserved seats in the National Assembly:

1. PML-N has gained 14 seats, raising its total to 124 members

2. PPP has secured 5 additional seats, increasing its strength to 75 members

Before the verdict, the party-wise position in the ruling coalition was as follows:

1. PML-N: 110 seats

2. PPP: 70 seats

3. MQM-P: 22 seats

4. PML-Q: 5 seats

5. Others: 6

Total (Ruling Alliance): 213 seats

Opposition strength

On the other hand, the opposition’s numbers have slightly increased as well:

1. Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC): 80 members

2. Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) has been awarded 3 seats, now holding 11 seats in total

3. Independent PTI-backed members: 8

4. Others: 4

As a result, the opposition's presence in the assembly now stands at 103 members.

Sources within the National Assembly Secretariat stated that an updated party position will be released once the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) formally notifies the allocation of the reinstated reserved seats.
