Karachi Kings edge past Quetta Gladiators by 14 runs in PSL 11 encounter

Karachi Kings thrashed Quetta Gladiators by 14 runs in the second match of  Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 played at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, on Friday.

Chasing a 182-run target, Quetta Gladiators got off to a strong start as openers Saud Shakeel and Shamyl Hussain added 79 runs.

Hussain played a brisk 52 off 24 balls, while Shakeel contributed 33 runs.

However, the rest of the batting line-up could not withstand the pressure applied by Karachi Kings’ bowlers, particularly Hassan Ali, who claimed four wickets for 27 runs.

Contributions from Riley Russo and Ben McDermott, who scored 25 runs each, were not enough, as Quetta finished on 167 for seven in their 20 overs.

Earlier, asked to bat first, Karachi Kings posted 181 for seven in their 20 overs. 

Karachi Kings batter Maheen Ali top-scored with 48 runs, while David Warner added 35, Saeed Baig contributed 30, Agha Salman scored 22, and Azam Khan chipped in with 14 runs, helping the team post a competitive total.

Chasing the total, Quetta Gladiators managed 167 for seven in their allotted overs, falling short despite contributions from several batsmen.

The victory gives Karachi Kings an early boost in the PSL points table, while Gladiators will look to bounce back in their upcoming fixtures. 

In bowling for Quetta Gladiators, Ahmed Daniyal took three wickets, while Alzari Joseph claimed two, putting early pressure on the Kings’ chase.

The Gladiators will now need 182 runs to secure victory.

Earlier, Quetta Gladiators won the toss and elected to bowl first against Karachi Kings.

Gladiators Saud Shakeel said: "We'll bowl first. I think with the sunlight early on, dew will come in later, and that's why we are bowling first. Yeah, I'm pretty much okay with that. I'm used to playing for Quetta Gladiators; this is my third year straight, so I'm happy. They both are playing. They are our important bowlers; we are relying on them and looking forward to their performance. I think it's very important. You set the tempo there, and you want your team to start well, so we are looking for that."

Karachi Kings David Warner said: "Look, it feels great to represent Karachi again and lead from the front. Hopefully, this year we can go a little bit better than last year. On a question regarding three Australian captains in PSL may make the job competitive.

“It's fantastic. For cricket over here in Pakistan, we owe a lot to Pakistan cricket. We toured here a couple of years ago for the first test in a long time, so we love coming back. It's great to have some fellow teammates here as well. We got some feedback about last night. It was a little bit on the slow side, but it looks like the grass coverage has come back a bit. It looks like the ball might stay low and there might be a little more skid than last night. We've got a few debutants. There's myself, Zampa, and a few others-six debutants in total."
