US rejects Iranian claim that proposed MoU would reopen Hormuz, lift blockade

Iranian state broadcaster Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting said on Wednesday that Tehran had obtained an initial unofficial framework for a possible memorandum of understanding with the United States aimed at ending tensions between the two countries.

According to the report, the proposed framework included steps to restore commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz to pre-conflict levels within one month.

The report also claimed the United States would withdraw military forces from areas near Iran and end a naval blockade under the proposed arrangement.

However, the White House strongly rejected the report, describing it as false.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the White House said the report was a “complete fabrication” and warned against trusting Iranian state media reports on the issue.

Iranian state television said the reported framework excluded military vessels and proposed that Iran would manage shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz in cooperation with Oman.

It added that the framework had not yet been finalised and that Tehran would not take any action without what it described as “tangible verification.”

According to the broadcaster, if a final agreement were reached within 60 days, it could potentially be endorsed through a binding resolution of the United Nations Security Council.
