Punjab in fear of oxygen, medicine shortage as virus cases surge

Punjab hospitals are fearing oxygen and medicine shortage in the wake of rising coronavirus cases in the province, reported 24NewsHD TV Channel.

In the provincial capital Lahore, the system of the government hospitals has been choked with the ever-increasing number of coronavirus patients.

The hospitals are also facing a medicine shortage and the medicines for the deadly disease are being sold in the black market. AN injection with a price tag of Rs30000 is currently being sold for Rs40000 in the black market.

Earlier, Specialized Healthcare Department, during its briefing to Punjab’s Apex Committee on Coronavirus has shown its inability to provide oxygen at coronavirus centres at Mayo Hospital and Expo Centre.

The Health Department has said that they can provide ventilators at these two centres but cannot provide oxygen there.

After this refusal from a frontline department of the government for healthcare supplies, fear of oxygen shortage has strongly been aroused and there are chances that the affected persons of coronavirus would suffer more in Punjab capital.

The Government Department on Wednesday gave a detailed briefing about an increase in usage of oxygen to the Apex Committee in which exposed the fact that Mayo Hospital, Expo Center, and PKLI in Lahore city are facing a great lack of oxygen.

The department further informed the Committee that the issue of the lack of oxygen could be expanded across the province along with Lahore city.

In the briefing, this was also disclosed that more than 300 percent usage of oxygen in three major public hospitals of Lahore including Mayo Hospital, Services Hospital and Jinnah Hospital had been increased.

According to the briefing, usage of oxygen in Mayo Hospital was increased to 329 percent, in Services 316 percent and in Jinnah Hospital 300 percent that was the major reason for shortage of oxygen in the public hospitals and the department was unable to provide oxygen to such hospitals and the Expo Center.

It is pertinent to mention here that RIC Rawalpindi was the only institute that was producing oxygen for itself while the Health Department has cut off a supply of oxygen to all Steel Mills and Glass Mills in Punjab province.

On the other hand, with the cooperation of the Chinese Company, the Pakistani National Institute of Health (NIH) would prepare a Corona vaccine named Cansino here in the country from next month. The raw material related to the said vaccine preparation will be reached here in the country in the first decade of May.

It is worth mentioning that three Boing-777 planes of Pakistan Air Line (PIA) had left for China to get one million doses of vaccine and they would return to Islamabad tomorrow (Thursday) morning.
