Dr Shamshad Akhtar laid to rest in Karachi; State Bank pays glowing tribute
The funeral prayer of former finance minister and ex-governor of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), Dr Shamshad Akhtar, was offered at Sultan Mosque in Defence, Karachi, on Sunday.
The funeral was attended by family members, relatives, friends, and former colleagues, who gathered to pay their last respects to the distinguished economist and public servant.
Dr Shamshad Akhtar, who made history as the first woman governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, was later laid to rest at Mewa Shah Graveyard.
Her passing marks the end of an era in Pakistan’s financial and economic leadership.
In an official condolence message, the Board of Directors, management, and staff of the State Bank of Pakistan expressed profound grief over the demise of their former governor.
The central bank described her tenure as a benchmark of exemplary leadership, integrity, and unwavering commitment to public service.
The SBP noted that Dr Akhtar played a pivotal role in strengthening the institution’s stability and sustainability, while also contributing significantly to the development of monetary and financial sector policies.
The State Bank of Pakistan extended heartfelt condolences to her bereaved family and loved ones, praying that Almighty Allah grant her eternal peace and patience to those she leaves behind. Ameen.
