A fire broke out Tuesday evening in a five-star hotel in the upscale French Alpine ski resort of Courchevel, forcing the evacuation of 83 occupants, firefighters said.

They were struggling to contain the blaze but had not yet reported any casualties.

The fire, the origin of which remains undetermined, was spreading through the roof of the building with a significant risk it could spread to adjacent buildings, Lieutenant-Colonel Emmanuel Viaud of the Savoie Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS) told AFP.

The fire broke out shortly before 7:00 pm (1800 GMT), and firefighters quickly responded to evacuate 83 guests from the Grandes Alpes hotel in the Courchevel 1850 resort, the officer explained.

"There are no casualties at this time," Viaud said, adding that the hotel's managers assured the firefighters that everyone is accounted for.
