Lionel Messi sets historic World Cup record with goals in seven straight matches

Argentina captain Lionel Messi etched his name deeper into football history by becoming the first player to score in seven consecutive FIFA World Cup matches, surpassing Just Fontaine and Jairzinho, 24NewsHD TV reported on Sunday. 

The 39-year-old superstar achieved the milestone with a stunning free-kick in the 80th minute of Argentina's match against Jordan, extending his side's lead to 3-1 and setting a new World Cup record.

With the goal, Messi surpassed the long-standing mark of scoring in six consecutive World Cup matches jointly held by Just Fontaine and Jairzinho.

Fontaine achieved the feat during the 1958 World Cup, while Jairzinho matched it at the 1970 tournament.

Messi's remarkable scoring streak began in the Round of 16 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup against Australia.

He then found the net against the Netherlands, Croatia, and France, playing a decisive role in guiding Argentina to the world title.

The Argentine icon has carried that outstanding form into the 2026 World Cup.

After scoring a hat-trick against Algeria and netting twice against Austria, he added another goal against Jordan to extend his record-breaking run.

Messi's latest strike also took his overall World Cup tally to 19 goals, further strengthening his place among the greatest players in the tournament's history.
