FBI Director Kash Patel’s emails hacked, private data leaked online
The personal emails and photos of FBI Director Kash Patel have reportedly been compromised in a cyberattack claimed by a group believed to have links with Iran, raising concerns over cybersecurity at the highest levels of US law enforcement.
The hacking group, identifying itself as Handala Hack Team, released a cache of material online, including personal and professional correspondence dating from 2010 to 2019. The leaked images appear to show Patel in various personal settings, including vacations in Cuba and Mexico, as well as in what seems to be an office in Washington, DC.
In statements posted online, the group mocked US cybersecurity systems, claiming that even top officials were vulnerable. The hackers also criticized the Federal Bureau of Investigation, alleging that its security infrastructure had been easily breached.
A US Justice Department official confirmed that Patel’s email account had been hacked but declined to provide further details. Reports indicate the compromised Gmail address had appeared in previous data breaches.
The FBI has not yet issued an official response to the incident.
Cybersecurity experts suggest that the Handala Hack Team presents itself as a pro-Palestinian entity, though it is widely believed to be linked to Iranian state interests. The group has previously claimed responsibility for cyberattacks, including a recent breach involving a US-based medical technology firm.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran, following recent military developments. Authorities have already warned of potential retaliatory cyberattacks targeting US institutions.
Earlier this month, the Justice Department announced it had seized a domain associated with the hacking group after an investigation led by the FBI, which also offered a $10 million reward for information leading to the arrest of those involved.
Officials say the breach underscores growing concerns about cyber warfare and the increasing sophistication of attacks targeting high-profile individuals and institutions.
