US, Iran reach preliminary deal pending Trump’s final approval: Axios

US and Iran talks have reportedly agreed on a 60-day memorandum of understanding aimed at extending a ceasefire and launching negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme, although final approval from US President Donald Trump is still pending, according to US news website Axios.

Citing unnamed sources, Axios reported that the proposed agreement would mark the most significant diplomatic breakthrough since the start of recent tensions between the two countries.

However, the report said difficult and detailed negotiations would still be required to reach a final agreement addressing Washington’s demands regarding Iran’s nuclear activities.

According to US officials quoted in the report, most terms of the agreement had been finalized by Tuesday, but both sides needed approval from their top leadership.

Officials said the Iranian side later informed mediators that it had secured the necessary approval and was ready to sign, though Tehran has not officially confirmed the claim.

US negotiators reportedly briefed President Trump on the details of the understanding, but he did not immediately approve it.

One American official said Trump told mediators he wanted a few days to review the proposal.

The draft memorandum reportedly includes guarantees for uninterrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, including the removal of naval mines by Iran within 30 days and assurances that commercial vessels would not face tolls or harassment.

The report also said any US naval blockade would be lifted gradually in line with the restoration of commercial shipping activity.

Officials said the understanding would also include Iran’s commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons.

During the proposed 60-day period, negotiators would discuss issues including the future of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile and possible limits on uranium enrichment.

According to the report, the United States would also commit to discussing sanctions relief, the release of frozen Iranian funds, and mechanisms to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid and essential goods to Iran during the talks.
