Nawaz, Shehbaz’s mother laid to rest at Jati Umra

Begum Shamim Akhtar – the mother of PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and party president Shehbaz Sharif – was laid to rest near her husband's grave at Jati Umra on Saturday afternoon, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Earlier, the funeral prayers for late Begum Shamim Akhtar were offered at Sharif Medical City in Raiwind outside Lahore attended by thousands of people.

Allama Raghib Naeemi of Jamia Naeemia led the prayers before her burial beside the grave of late Muhammad Sharif – her husband. The central and local PML-N leaders as well as some other politicians, including Haji Ghulam Ahmed Bilour of ANP and Mian Aslam Iqbal of PTI, were also present on the occasion.

Earlier in the morning, Shehbaz and his son Hamza received the body at the Hajj Terminal of the airport after British Airways’ Flight No BA-259 carried the coffin from the Heathrow Airport.

Later, her body was first placed in morgue at Sharif Medical City and later shifted to the family’s Jati Umra residence which was again transported in an ambulance this time to the ground for funeral prayers. Vehicles carrying Shehbaz and other family members were also part of the convoy.

The Sharif brothers’ sister – Kausar Bibi – also accompanied the coffin and arrived in Lahore in the same flight.

A video shared on Twitter shows Shehbaz consoling his sister as she wept and hugged her brother.

On Friday, the funeral prayers of Begum Shamim were offered at the Regent’s Park mosque in London where only 50 close family members, friends and colleagues were present because of the restrictions imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Soon after offering the funeral prayers, Nawaz and other family members left for the airport from where the body would be sent to Lahore for burial

Begum Shamim passed away on December 22 in London where she had arrived earlier this year to stay with his eldest son.
